Navigating who’s who in the Australian electricity industry

This is my first attempt at mapping the players in my industry; the transmission and distribution of electricity. It’s mainly relevant to the Australian states that form part of the National Electricity Market (NEM). There is also a New South Wales bias since that’s what I am most familiar with. I hope to expand this over time and with your feedback.

The industry map is a work in progress and I know that I have missed many important players. Hopefully I have not offended anyone😊. I’m also aware that some of the organisations are involved across multiple categories. I have tried to capture their most significant role but hope to incorporate their other roles in the next version.

The people who make up the organisations in this post will play such an important role over the next decade. That’s because they will build the infrastructure that is so critical to connecting our renewable future to the electricity grid. And ultimately they will assist in securing a more climate friendly electricity supply to the citizens of Australia.

The industry map contains the various organisations and other stakeholders grouped by the role they play within the industry. Each organisation is hyperlinked to their website for convenience or to find out more about them. It is slightly more legible if you use the “pop-out” option, which opens the graphic in full screen.

I’d really like to hear from the following people:

  • Leaders from the organisations referenced in the map – I’d love to chat with you about where you see the industry going and your organisation’s role in it
  • Anyone who can add missing pieces of the map – have I missed out any key organisations or even an entire category? I know that there is a lot more to the suppliers category than currently shown.
  • If you have any interest in this industry and have some opinions about how it’s set up and how things may, or should, change moving forward (e.g. recent change of government)

If you are in any of the above categories, please contact me by email, LinkedIn or the comment box below. I’m looking forward to discussing this very important industry landscape with you.
